During the two-week "Weaving Past into Future" residency at La Tegolaia in Tuscany, a diverse group of creatives came together to explore sustainable and circular textile practices. Through workshops by/for the residents, shared meals, and excursions, participants delved into traditional techniques and contemporary innovations, emphasizing the value of interconnectedness and thoughtful making.
Through a thoughtful excursion program by Alessia Pasquini, the program offered deep engagement with Tuscany's rich textile heritage. Visits to local initiatives and collaborative sessions fostered a community centered on co-creation, experimentation, and the reimagining of textile futures.

The Monte Verità: Cultivating a New Reality residency brought together an interdisciplinary group for two weeks in Cairo Montenotte, a town in the mountains of Liguria, Italy. Organized by SOPRA SOTTO, led by Constance van Berckel and Juliette Westerink, the residency was a living laboratory for creative exploration and communal living. Inspired by the early 20th-century Monte Verità art commune, participants embraced slowness and simplicity to reconnect with nature and each other. Through workshops, dialogues, and shared experiences, they explored regenerative practices, synergetic systems, and perspectives beyond the human-centered view, drawing inspiration from both ancient wisdom and the surrounding landscape.
The program was co-created by its residents, each contributing workshops and creative sessions, from bird flocking dances and nature drawing to poetry, song harmonization, and self-portraiture. Playful moments and shared rituals—like bonfires, communal meals, and Valentine’s Day celebrations—deepened their connection. The group bonded not just with each other but also with the local wildlife, including wild cats and Giulia’s dog, Sam. Encounters with the local community, like a wood-fired pizza night with Claudio and a farewell dance at La Perla, added to the richness of the experience. Through this immersive gathering, the residency cultivated a sense of interconnectedness, leaving lasting impressions of creativity, community, and shared exploration.

ARTE, TERRA, COMUNITÀ IN TOSCANA - Exploring community building and relational practice through drawing and food culture

The residents partook in regular experimental drawing workshops facilitated by Milena, complemented by a co-created program of workshops designed by and for the residents. This approach aimed to inspire holistic knowledge-sharing rooted in relational principles, fostering community through cross-disciplinary collaboration. Inspired by Bell Hooks’ emphasis on learning through connection, these principles were deeply spiritual, promoting transformation through self-enquiry and collective feedback.
Tactile experiences like manual drawing and engaging with the Tuscan land provided pathways to mindfulness, offering creatives and culture shapers a chance to slow down and reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. The residency prioritized artistic process, creative exchange, critical thinking, and experimentation over tangible outcomes.

Textiles Residency
'Senses and Sustainability: reimagining fashion, textile production, consumerism and our connection to nature'.
Collaborator: Alessia Pasquini
Residents:
Exploring the tension between consumerism and environmental consciousness, the residency delves into the paradox of materialism and spiritual connection to nature in Tuscany, particularly within the influential fashion and textiles industry. We explored concepts like self-sufficiency and de-growth mindset, and looked into new initiatives and solutions like recycling strategies, biodegradable fabrics and other ways of closing the waste loop.

Cultural & Creative Exchange
Residents:
An exchange between the international residents, through critical dialogue, peer-to-peer review moments and collaborative workshops; as well as an exchange between the residents and the local culture and creative scene, through excursions to Florence, art studio visits and connecting to the Tuscan food culture. The second aspect of the residency was to delve into what it means to partake in an interdisciplinary art residency, where program, intention and scope of the residency itself was researched and simultaneously questioned, in order to explore the most intentional and beneficial residency framework for the residents.
